In this webinar, the second in our Tools for Change series, Garth Nowland-Foreman will briefly look at some of the difficulties surrounding the measurement of Outcomes. He will then explore how the Theory of Change can be used to keep organisations on track to achieve their objectives.
Outcomes are important to organisations striving to ‘make a difference’ in the Tangata Whenua, Community and Voluntary Sector. Tracking Outcomes, however, is fraught with difficulty as Outcome Measures are riddled with systemic limitations and distortions. While Outcomes are the most significant thing we can focus on, they are also almost impossible to directly monitor or report on. To the extent they can be measured:
(1) we may lose sight of less measurable (but equally or even more important) aspects of what we do;
(2) the cost of doing so frequently becomes prohibitive; and
(3) we usually can’t get the information we need in a timely manner.
In his many years working with the Not For Profit Sector, Garth Nowland-Foreman has found that organisations that only focus on the things that are easy to measure, sometimes overlook the most important things. This is particularly concerning given research which suggests that the most effective community organisations have a very strong focus on their mission and values. In this webinar, Garth will share his insights into how, in the real world, a ‘Theory of Change’ can be a very useful tool. It can help organisations monitor and report (in a timely and affordable way) on progress towards the most important things, and ensure they stay on-track – at a programme or an organisational level.

About the Presenter
Garth is a Director at the LEAD Centre for Not for Profit Governance and Leadership where he works with community organisations and those that fund them. Formerly a lecturer for the Unitec Graduate Diploma in Not for Profit Management, Garth has worked extensively in community development through both government and NGO roles in Australia, NZ and the wider Asia-Pacific region. He is an accomplished author and recognised expert in strategic leadership and governance of NGOs. Garth’s expertise and skill in training, coaching, and mentoring has resulted in him being appointed to a number of advisory roles to government and philanthropic funders on strategy, accountability, evaluation and reviews. He is a passionate researcher and has undertaken or supervised a range of research projects, reports and submissions for non-profit organisations . Garth has an impressive publication list and is often called on as a public speaker on NGO development and civil society.
