Movers and Shakers: Women’s Stories from the Christchurch Earthquakes

Community Research Webinar

9 December 2014

11.00am-12.30pm

Throughout 2011 as Christchurch responded to the earthquakes, the ruins, the crumbled cliffs, and the aftershocks, community action was crucial.  But who was active?  Who were the workers, the initiators, and the activists?

In this third Community Research webinar, Rosemary Du Plessis, Judith Sutherland, Liz Gordon and Helen Gibson weave the post-quake stories of over 150 Christchurch women, giving their analysis of community resilience, grief and connectedness.  They tell the stories of community-based disaster efforts and what these tell us about women’s resourcefulness in extraordinary and very challenging circumstances.

This webinar covers:

  • The unique nature of women’s resourcefulness
  • The nature of community resilience
  • The methodologies and rewards involved in training over 30 women to be researchers
  • How this project emerged from a post-quake meeting of one NGO wishing to document post-quake learnings, and the rewards and challenges of this
