Pohutukawa

>> This year was uncertain with the global financial crisis dominating the news. Some are bracing their organisations for some lean times ahead. However, we are anticipating that a resourceful and imaginative sector like ours, will find new ways to cope in the upcoming year.

The Tangata Whenua, Community & Voluntary Sector Research Centre held its AGM in late November. Find out who the new Governance-Kaitiaki group members are HERE

A number of you also presented at the recent ANZTSR (Australia and New Zealand Third Sector Research conference). A short summary of presenters from the Research Centre governance-kaitiaki group is included in this newsletter. Don't forget to go to The Clearing House website to check out the larger range of papers and presentations from conference presenters over the next few weeks. Use the key word "anzstr".

We look forward to continuing to provide a virtual place for you to share your new ideas and resources with others. We encourage you to take a few moments during the holiday season to upload a few more papers, articles, reports and presentations so that others can benefit from the work you and your organisations do.

Thank you to all of you for supporting, participating, donating, uploading, searching and spreading the word about the Research Centre and THE CLEARING HOUSE.

People's choice this month is ...
>> We count what our visitors download in THE CLEARING HOUSE and the top downloads make up our People's Choice Top 10. This month's People's Choice is TAKING THE PULSE SEMINAR / TE KOKIRITANGA O TE HA by Garth Nowland-Foreman.  This is a brief report of an August 2008 seminar on possibilities for a sector-wide survey in Aotearoa New Zealand. It included a presentation by Lester Salamon (Centre for Civil Society Studies, Johns Hopkins University) on the US sector "Listening Post" project. "Taking the PULSE" refers to documenting the prospects, understandings and learnings from sector experience.

It isn't easy Going Green
Beach

>> A recent UK report suggest that charities' efforts to increase their environmental sustainability is more a result of individual staff members interests than strategic decisions by trustees or committee members.

The report by the UK CHARITY COMMISSION found a range of practical, financial and attitudinal barriers to taking "green" action. It also found that some trustees and board members are concerned that engaging in environmental issues may not be a legitimate use of charity resources.

The report noted that in many cases if key individuals left "the momentum for environmental action would be lost." We wonder how much of this is due to imposed compliance issues and whether we find similar results in Aotearoa New Zealand?

A request from the Tangata Whenua Caucus
>> At the November hui of the Tangata Whenua caucus (one of the two halves of the Research Centre's Governance/Kaitiaki group) three things were reaffirmed:

Whanaungatanga: a desire to strengthen and further develop existing Maori research and evaluation relationships.

Mana: Ngai Tatou mo tatou! Promoting and celebrating by Tangata Whenua for Tangata Whenua.

Nga Hononga: An intent to initiate collaborative ventures that 'model' the Tangata Whenua – Tangata Tiriti relationships.

Financial reporting
>> Many do not understand the minimum requirements for appropriate for financial reporting in the community and voluntary sector. Fortunately, presenters Ken Crofts, Dr Carolyn Cordery and Rowena Sinclair have just uploaded their presentation on The Clearing House to help people navigate this complex area.

Their ANZTSR Conference workshop noted that often third sector organisations use high quality, non-financial reporting to communicate the difference they make to their stakeholders. However, it is also important to communicate financial data to meet regulatory and other requirements.

Charles Sturt University lecturer Ken Croft highlighted developments at the international accounting standards level and summarised the Australian Senate Inquiry into the Disclosure regimes for charities and not-for-profit organisations. The inquiry is considering whether that country will implement a Charities Commission or similar. The Senate report is available HERE and Ken's PowerPoint slides are available HERE

Victoria University accounting lecturer Dr Carolyn Cordery's poster showed the minimum requirements in New Zealand. She presented the upcoming Ministry of Economic Development's review of the Financial Reporting Act which we expect to see by mid-2009. The poster is HERE

Auckland University of Technology senior accounting lecturer Rowena Sinclair, who's PhD study is on the complexities of charities' financial reporting, shared her concerns about transparency and accountability, especially in areas of reporting for assets, donations, funds and outputs. Her slides are HERE

Workshop participants' questions and feedback are available HERE
