A place to find good community research & researchers

Distributor of research & resources for the
Tangata Whenua, Community & Voluntary Sector

Newsletter June 2008

It's the end ... but we're just getting started

THE CLEARING HOUSE project's first funding round from the Digital Strategy's Community Partnership Fund and the ASB Community Trust will be over at the end of June.

After two years, what did the project achieve? The Tangata Whenua, Community & Voluntary Sector Research Centre that initiated the project, recently asked Research Evaluation Consultancy Ltd (REC) to find out.

According to the independent evaluation, The Clearing House helped to strengthen the identity of the Tangata Whenua, Community and Voluntary Sector by:

1. establishing its CODE OF PRACTICE,
2. successfully modelling GOVERNANCE using its Te Tiriti Relationship Framework,
3. developing
THE CLEARING HOUSE WEBSITE, and
4. raising the awareness of research as a priority for the Sector.

REC also said respondents unanimously agreed that The Clearing House was needed to enhance the profile of the sector and to improve access to research. "The Clearing House has a solid foundation from which ‘to kick-on’," said REC.

Now, the Research Centre wants The Clearing House to be the lead distributor of research for the Sector. "It's up to the membership to contribute what it believes is good research," said project manager Robyn Kamira, "and it's up to all of us to ensure the project continues to operate and reach its optimum potential for the Sector."

Strategy in Action - what we will do

The RESEARCH CENTRE'S 2008 strategy lists five key strategies.  Its STRATEGY IN ACTION document's first strategy will promote the visibility of, and access to community research by further developing The Clearing House, promoting hui, conferences, community research associations and journals, and more.

Strategy two is about quality assurance and good practice. It will achieve this using its CODE OF PRACTICE, developing templates and guides, and creating capacity building opportunities for communities and researchers alike.

Strategy three aims to strengthen connections across sectors, both locally and internationally. It will organise virtual meeting places such as "Online Jams".

Strategy four is about research of strategic significance to the sector. It includes needs analyses, meta-research and the gathering and reporting of longitudinal data that is of importance to the sector.

Strategy five will ensure the sustainable operation of the Research Centre by good planning, staffing, budgeting and monitoring. It aims to embed its fundraising strategy for a sufficient and diversified income stream. And, it aims to MINIMISE ITS ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT.

"In all my years of work in the sector, research has never been quite such a popular priority, but participants could now see that research is essential to advance the sector’s credibility and effectiveness. This felt like a clear endorsement of this project and the wider Research Centre concept." -- Evaluation participant

SUPPORTING THE WORK OF THE CLEARING HOUSE

Have you put that on The Clearing House yet?

Our members said they want The Clearing House to be THE place to go for community research. It's about volume and quality. When your colleagues produce good research do you ask them "Have you put that on The Clearing House yet?"

We want every researcher to send at least one resource to The Clearing House whether it be a peer reviewed paper, a conference paper or presentation, a template, a guide - anything that is useful for communities.

We want to increase the volume and quality of research in The Clearing House so it becomes THE place to go and so that it becomes an important site for New Zealand's communities.

So have you asked yet?

What you can do
Go to the WEBSITE and SEND us just one resource - send it today - tell your colleagues how easy it was.

Click FORWARD at the top of this email and fill the "TO" line with friends and colleagues that you think will be interested - but please tell them it's from you (so they know we did not spam them).

Upcoming project

Maori Metadata project: The Maori Metadata Project aims to develop a set of technical tools, templates and "how to's" that will help organisations to enable stronger searching for bilingual or Te Reo resources that they make available to others.  The project will use The Clearing House, which already has some Maori metadata elements built-in.  It will design, implement and test the methods – then it will extract tools and templates so that other projects can use them freely.  Thanks to Te Waka Wahine Wa-Hangarau (Professional Maori Women in IT) for getting us started by providing the feasibility and project scope funding.
